Description
Protein is broken down into amino acids during the digestive process and these are used principally in the construction growth and maintenance of every tissue in the body. Protein is also important for the manufacture of hormones, the chemical messengers that regulate all bodily processes, infection fighting antibodies, and enzymes, the chemical catalysts, which enable vital biological reactions to take place. Sufficient protein intake is therefore essential for good health.
This proportionally higher protein intake can result in a slight increase of weight initially, due to an increase in muscle which is heavier than fat. Furthermore, eating protein and fat triggers the release of the hormone glucagon, which initiates the burning of the body fat for conversion to glucose. This is then used as fuel for the break down of the protein and dietary fat into amino acids and fatty acids respectively, so again, as a result of this, our body becomes a fat burning, rather than a fat storage machine.
